"Erlina and I are leaving tomorrow, but the Headmaster was kind enough to let us make your first day special."
     ― Brugaves

Brugaves is a character in Sea of Stars.

Compendium Description[]

Brugaves
Lunar Martial Artist

Though he was born during a Winter Solstice, Brugaves seldom has any magic power. Recognizing his unparalleled melee combat prowess, Headmaster Moraine gave him two rods carved from lunar crystals, hoping it would help Brugaves develop his magic potential.

It never worked, but the rods did add some lunar magic effects to his attacks, so Brugaves connected the two rods with a chain and made them his official weapon, the Moonchaku.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Brugaves has bright blue eyes and long, spiky black hair worn behind a blue bandanna. His hair connects to his notably-styled beard, which has a spiky design that ends in two points on his chin. He wears a necklace studded with white arrows, and a sash over the left side of his chest, leaving the right side exposed. The sash connects to the one over his waist. He also has a belt with a heavy buckle, plus a large amount of armor and a pauldron on his right arm. His pants are loose and baggy, grey in colour, and he wears geta.

His Moonchaku are worn on the right side of his waist.

Personality[]

When first met Brugaves is shown to be a kind individual, as he behaves in a gentle, nurturing way towards the young Zale and Valere. He is almost always found next to Erlina, and appears to take his duties as a Solstice Warrior seriously. He dutifully shows up for the cleansing at the Haunted Mansion and fights the Dweller of Woe fiercely alongside the other Solstice Warriors.

However, Brugaves in reality rues his life as a Solstice Warrior, and despises Zenith Academy as well as Headmaster Moraine. He is deeply saddened by what had occurred with the Dweller of Strife and after the loss of nearly every Solstice Warrior, he became disillusioned in his purpose. Unlike Erlina, he feels a lot of sadness rather than anger toward his situation, and desires to forget everything that has happened, never to fight another Solstice Warrior again. He feels pain at being called slow, as he was never able to master Lunar magic, and desires to feel fit and adequate in his role for once.

Like Erlina, Brugaves cares for Zale and Valere, and he had even arranged for them to go with himself and Erlina when the Acolytes showed up. He is dismayed and saddened when the two refuse the offer, and tries to talk them into it so their lives could be saved. He also appears to care deeply for Erlina, as he promises to find her again after their final confrontation with the Fleshmancer.

During his early life, Brugaves, alongside Erlina, were trained to be Solstice Warriors under Moraine, though Brugaves was noted to be slow with learning magic. However, one day, Brugaves and Erlina witnessed Moraine returning from a mission gone wrong, with him being the only survivor. Brugaves and Erlina would eventually become Solstice Warriors, though both would be disillusioned on their true purpose.

Some time later, Mooncradle would receive two new Children of the Solstice, Valere and six months later Zale, with Brugaves responsible for training Valere when she was old enough. At some point during their training duties, they came into contact with the Fleshmancer Acolytes, who they struck a deal, with one of the terms being Brugaves wanting to forget his past life.

After Zale and Valere graduated from the academy, Brugaves, alongside Erlina, Moraine, and the townsfolk saw them off for them to fulfill the next part of their test by visiting the Elder Mist.

Much later on, Brugaves arrived at the Town of Lucent with Moraine and Erlina to reunite with Zale and Valere for the battle against the Dweller of Woe. They then went to the Haunted Mansion, where Brugaves and Erlina were tasked with clearing and securing the basement while Zale and Valere were sent to dispatch the Botanical Horror. Soon after, they regrouped and confronted the Dweller of Woe, who, after Garl's assistance in providing the eclipse needed to weaken it, was defeated by the five Solstice Warriors. Before the core could be dealt with, Seraï, the assassin that accompanied Zale, Valere, and Garl in the mansion, suddenly appeared to take Brugaves hostage. However, Brugaves was freed by Erlina, who then cut off the group with her prism barrier and revealed their deception when the Fleshmancer Acolytes arrived to bring out the Dweller of Strife using a blood moon that was created by Brugaves and Erlina. After their work was done, Brugaves, Erlina, and the Acolytes departed the mansion.

Brugaves briefly appeared in Autumn Hills observing Zale, Valere, and their comrades after they defeated the Leaf Monster blocking their path. Both he and Erlina then confronted the two Solstice Warriors outside of Clockwork Castle in an attempt to buy the Acolytes time to complete their work with the Dweller of Strife. Despite putting up a decent fight, they lost to both of their former protégés.

After the Dweller of Strife was hit with the Vial of Time during its battle with the Solstice Warriors, Brugaves and Erlina witnessed the return of Aephorul, who, after a brief conversation with Resh'an, decided to grant Brugaves's desire to forget about his past and become stronger. After assuring him that the former Solstice Warrior will soon be "the fastest there's ever been," Brugaves departed through the open portal with the Acolytes.

In the credits of the game's real ending, Brugaves is seen as the demon general Barma'thazël.

"One stretch goal was to have a Brugaves flashback somewhere during Act 6. For this sequence, we need Erlina and Brugaves to be around ten to twelve years old, and Moraine to also be twenty years younger, however you imagine him!"
