The Dweller of Dread is a boss in Sea of Stars. It is one of several Dwellers, and it is encountered in the Infinite Abyss. After slaying this Dweller, Zale and Valere unlock the ability to fly on the world map, letting them uncover new areas, such as three Solstice Shrines.

Boss Fight[]

Overview[]

The Dweller of Dread has three phases and is fought with Zale, Valere, Seraï, Resh'an, and B'st as the available party members.

In the first two phases, the party stands on a descending platform and has to fight and destroy two tentacles in each phase. In the first phase, the left tentacle's first move is always Slap, while the right tentacle's right move is always Piquant. In the second phase, the left tentacle's first move is always Piquant, while the right tentacle's move is always Slap.

During the third phase, the platform finishes descending and is framed by the moon, and the party fights the Dweller of Dread itself, accompanied by two of its tentacles. These tentacles have the same moveset as the two previous phases, but they now have the ability to grab any party member and temporarily take them out of the fight, potentially following up with the Dweller performing Chomp. When a tentacle in the third phase is defeated, it respawns after 3 turns.

For the third phase, the left tentacle prioritizes performing Grab as its first move, but there must be two or three active party members on the battlefield, and it may not perform it if it is delayed for an extended period of time, being overwritten to perform a different attack if the right tentacle performs Grab prior to the left one. The Dweller of Dread's first move is Dread Stare if Zale or Valere are active when the phase starts; otherwise, it performs a regular attack.

During the transition between the first phase to second phase, and second phase to third phase, all Live Mana is removed, though HP, MP, CP, ultimate bar, and Lunar Shields for the party are otherwise retained. Although party members are not revived between phases, the number of times they've been knocked out is reset, resetting their KO star count back to the default starting amount for when they are next knocked out.

Skills (Tentacle)[]

Slap[]

Timer Target Strikes
1-3 1 party member 1

The Dweller of Dread's tentacle slam attacks a single party member.

Piquant[]

Timer Target Strikes
1-3 1 party member 1

The Dweller of Dread's tentacle shoots purple spikes at a single party member.

Grab[]

Timer Target Strikes
1-3 1 party member 1

The Dweller of Dread's tentacle can only use Grab when accompanied by the Dweller of Dread itself. Its tentacle grabs a single party member and takes them out of the fight, making them temporarily unusable in combat. This move cannot be blocked, and it ignores any Lunar Shields, destroying them in the process. Grab is immediately followed up by the tentacle casting the locks of Chomp.

Chomp[]

Locks Timer Target Strikes
2-lock permutation, allowing for repetition, of SwordBluntSunMoon 1 1 party member 1

The Dweller of Dread only uses Chomp after it uses Grab to capture a single party member with one of its tentacles. Breaking the locks, or slaying the tentacle, will release the captured party member, though if all of the locks are not broken when the timer reaches 0, the Dweller will use Chomp on them. The Dweller takes the captured party member into its mouth, chews, and spits them out.

If Chomp is not blocked, it instantly KO's the party member. If it is successfully blocked, it leaves the party member with 1 HP remaining; this holds true even if the party member only has 1 HP to begin with. Otherwise, with the Artful Gambit equipped, a successful block only depletes 1 HP, unless it is their last HP, in which case, it leaves the party member with 1 HP remaining.

Skills (Dweller of Dread)[]

Regular Attack[]

Timer Target Strikes
1-3 All party members 1 each

The Dweller of Dread clamps down on all party members with its mouth.

Dread Stare[]

Locks Timer Target Summon Amount
BluntSwordSunSwordBlunt 2 Zale or Valere Valere or Zale 1
MoonSwordMoonSwordMoon

The Dweller of Dread can only cast Dread Stare if Zale or Valere are active on the battlefield. It uses its secondary eyes to trap Zale or Valere in a dark illusion where they are pitted against an illusion of the other. Live Mana generated in this battlefield is independent of the Live Mana on the regular battlefield. Defeating or getting incapacitated by the illusion returns Zale/Valere to the battle.

This attack will fail if it detects 0 Solstice Warriors on the battlefield at any turn prior to its activation, in which the Dweller of Dread will use its regular attack instead. Zale and Valere are not considered present on the battlefield if they are swapped out, knocked out, or grabbed. This attack will still succeed even if the original Solstice Warrior target is swapped out for the opposite one, maintaining at least 1 Solstice Warrior on the battlefield. Strangely and counterintuitively, the attack will fail if an amount of 0 Solstice Warriors is achieved by swapping Zale and Valere out of battle (under normal circumstances, creating a team consisting of Seraï, Resh'an, and B'st) then swapping them back in without any turns passing.

Skills (Valere/Zale)[]

Regular Attack[]

Timer Target Strikes
1 Zale or Valere 1-2

The enemy version of Valere/Zale strikes playable Zale/Valere one to two times with their weapon.
