"You just do your Solstice Warrior duties, and I'll keep your bellies full!"
     ― Garl

Garl is one of six playable characters in Sea of Stars. He is a resident of Mooncradle, and though he is not a Solstice Warrior, he works together with his best friends, Valere and Zale. The Elder Mist hesitantly approves of him, and requires that he remember his own limitations when it comes to combat. It is written in the stars that his heart just might be warm enough to "soothe a long tormented soul."

Main Story[]

Garl is a regular Mooncradle boy who is childhood friends with Zale and Valere. One day as young children, the trio decides to go to the Forbidden Cavern to explore but quickly come under attack by a group of Luslugs. One of them gouges Garl's left eye as he attempts to protect his friends from the assault. After being rescued by Headmaster Moraine and returning to Mooncradle, Garl is separated from Zale and Valere as they are promptly taken to Zenith Academy to start their training as Solstice Warriors. He is unable to see his friends during that time, though he manages to leave them some cookies with a note before being caught by Moraine.

When Zale and Valere graduate 10 years later, Garl reunites with them at Mountain Trail and joins them on their journey, offering up his skills as a cook and defensive fighter. Though a commoner has never served as a companion to Solstice Warriors before, the Elder Mist takes an interest in Garl and believes that with his warm heart, he could soothe "a long tormented soul." Tasked with finding their way to Wraith Island, the group begins to journey to the Port Town of Brisk where they meet a group of pirates led by Captain Klee'shaë. They agree to help the Solstice Warriors, so long as one of their group can defeat their quartermaster Valtraid in an arm-wrestling competition. If they lose, the pirates are owed a favor in turn. Garl volunteers to be the opponent and loses quickly due to Valtraid's enchanted shirt.

After retrieving the Coin of Undeath Accord for the pirates, Zale, Valere, and Garl are taken to Wraith Island as promised. While staying in the Town of Lucent, they witness one of the townsfolk succumbing to the curse of the Dweller of Woe. The trio follows, attempting to stop him from entering the Haunted Mansion, but ultimately fail. As they are about to turn back, the curse claims Garl, though he is rescued by the assassin Seraï, who incapacitates him with a paralyzing poison. He is eventually restored after Zale, Valere, and Seraï retrieve a Soul Stone to fully break the curse. Cured, he accompanies the rest of the remaining Solstice Warriors to the cleansing, where he is sent up to the roof by Moraine to let the light of the eclipse into the mansion. While he successfully does so with a makeshift bomb, the group is betrayed by Erlina and Brugaves and the Dweller of Strife is revived, destroying Brisk in the process.

Despite the setback, Garl helps the group claim The Vespertine in order to help ferry some the former townsfolk of Brisk to a new island for a fresh start. Garl spearheads the construction efforts and provides everyone with meals. Upon its completion, Garl is given the honor of naming the village, which he calls "Mirth." Later, after a defeated Moraine announces his resignation from his Solstice Warrior duties, Garl recommends him to take the role of Town Elder. The party makes their way to Watcher Island to seek an audience with the Oracle of Tides in order to find a way to Mesa Island to fight the newly-revived Dweller. The Docarri oracle tells Garl that he will be capable of a great deed in the future, but only when it is too late to act on it, and when that moment comes, he should "demand a Flask of Borrowed Time."

With the help of Resh'an and his alchemy, Garl is able to convince a now-awakened Khukharr to be let onto Mesa Island. While passing through Songshroom Marsh, the party meets with the seer Yomara, who prompts Garl to eat a pear from her tree. After hearing his insight, she acknowledges him as the "chosen one" before seeing them off. The party eventually arrive at the Clockwork Castle to confront the Dweller of Strife, though they stand no chance against the Dweller's overwhelming power. On the verge of losing, Garl and Seraï appeal to Resh'an for help, only to be refused due to his rules. Seraï responds by knocking the Vial of Time into the Dweller, which triggers the arrival of The Fleshmancer, Aephorul. He decides to give an "eye for an eye," about to hit Zale and Valere with magic, only for Garl to jump in front to take the hit himself. Zale carries the dying Garl back to Elder Mist, who shows Garl visions of his unfulfilled prophecy. Remembering what the Oracle of Tides told him, Garl demands a Flask of Borrowed Time from Resh'an, which delays his passing until his final task is complete: to gain his friends access to the Sea of Stars in order to confront The Fleshmancer at his current stronghold.

Garl guides the group to seek audience with the Sky Giants Council. In exchange for access to the Sea of Stars, Garl offers to wake and soothe The Sleeper, substituting an elemental ritual by incorporating them into the process of baking a giant loaf of bread within Kiln Mountain. After the council agrees to entertain the plan, the group splits up to fulfill all of the tasks, with Garl performing Earth and heading to the Stonemasons Outpost to recruit Malkomud for the terraforming. Garl successfully creates the bread and earns the long-tormented Sky Serpent's thanks. Garl renames the serpent Wentworth, and rides on his back in the company of his friends as his Borrowed Time expires and he passes away peacefully. Garl's funeral is held in Mooncradle, and he is buried under the Celestial Willow.

After the defeat and death of Elysan'darëlle during the initial ending, Aephorul retreats, and Zale and Valere ascend to Guardian Gods. Despite the vastness of their new duties, they pass over their world once a year on Garl's birthday. Upon the completion of the initial ending, its events may optionally be rewritten using a mysterious device known as The Chronophage that appears appears in the Moorlands. The device triggers the potential for a group of seven monoliths to begin glowing. The upper-left monolith glows by default, symbolizing the defeat of Elysan'darëlle. The other six begin to glow by defeating the Gun Goddess, opening the treasure chest guarded by the Sea Slug, defeating the Elder Mist as the final Solstice Shrine challenge, conquering the Dweller's Fall Arena, freeing Duke Aventry by handing him the Aventry Locket, and handing all 60 Rainbow Conches to Mirna in Docarri Village.

The final key to unlocking The Chronophage is providing it with a memento of a happy memory. After they use the Cookie Jar that Garl gave them years ago, Zale and Valere head through the now-opened portal, along with B'st, arriving at the time stop Resh'an made just before Garl is hit by The Fleshmancer's attack. B'st takes Garl's place and his form while Zale and Valere pull Garl out from the line of fire and return back to the present. There, the group happily reunites with Garl, who is proud of the group for finding a way to save him. After going back to Mooncradle to reunite with B'st, Garl thanks his savior and insists on cooking a meal for the group at camp.

Returning to the Fleshmancer's Lair after a dinner at the Golden Pelican celebrating his return, the group once again confronts Aephorul at the top, but before he summons Elysan'darëlle to his side, Garl interjects and tells Aephorul to fight his own battles, throwing an apple at the alchemist. Aephorul then engages the group in battle but is ultimately defeated, with Garl himself delivering the final blow and knocking him down to the ground. After Aephorul leaves with Resh'an, the newly-ascended Guardian Gods depart, with the promise to visit Garl on his birthday. Many years later, Garl has taken over as Town Elder of Mirth from Moraine, and after helping oversee the crypt's construction alongside Teaks and The Artificer, he departs for Mooncradle with Wentworth to reunite with Zale and Valere at their old hideout.
