Keenathan is a character in Sea of Stars. He is one of the pirates in Captain Klee'shaë's crew.

Inexplicably proud of his name, Keenathan discovered his affinity to wind magic when he blindfolded himself once as a kid by putting on a pirate costume while he was already dressed as a pirate.

Keeping the ship's sails full at all times, Keenathan is in for the adventure, wherever it takes him.

Profile

Appearance

Keenathan wears two brown-black eyepatches, and dons a blue cape over his pirate attire, fastened with a brooch shaped like an octopus's face. A red book is strapped to his waist, and his right leg is a wooden pegleg. Typically in his left hand, he wields a staff with an upside-down red octopus at the top end, which he uses for support and to conjure his spells.

Personality

Keenathan is loyal to Captain Klee'shaë and the rest of the pirate crew, and travels with them. He is calm and collected, and frequently mentions the sorts of tasks he and the crew will accomplish, adding "or my name is not Keenathan!" to the end of these statements. With his wind magic, Keenathan helps others, as seen when he sails the pirates and the protagonists to Wraith Island and helps out with the building at Mirth.

Main Story

At the Port Town of Brisk, Keenathan is seen standing nearby with the other pirates as Valtraid finishes pounding a signpost stake into the ground. Zale, Valere, and Garl encounter the pirates at the docks, and the two groups introduce each other. They meet again at The Humble Boast, and the party agrees to participate in an arm-wrestling match against Valtraid. After Garl loses, Keenathan accompanies the party to the Abandoned Wizard's Lab, as directed by Captain Klee'shaë.

Once the Coin of Undeath Accord is retrieved, Keenathan sails the party and his fellow pirates to Wraith Island by using his wind magic on the Oakum Skiff's sail, propelling the raft through the Shallowmire. They reach The First Stage of Grief, and the pirates play music on stage for the entertainment of the patrons. He and the other members of the pirate band can be seen at other taverns and inns scattered around the world, where he plays the concertina, along with his octopus companion, who plays the flute.

After the Dweller of Strife awakens and destroys Brisk, Keenathan and the other pirates help to evacuate people who are rounded up by Zale and Valere. The party, the pirates, and some of the displaced citizens of Brisk eventually sail to Settlers Island, and Keenathan uses his wind magic to help build settlements in the town of Mirth. Later after attending Garl's funeral in Mooncradle, the pirates visit the Sky Giants Council at Cloud Kingdom to receive permission to traverse the Sea of Stars. During his turn to report attendance, Keenathan states his role and name to the council. Upon hearing it, the council quietly discusses among themselves, and afterwards, they remark there is an error in their records which they will disregard.

If the player participates in Dweller's Fall Arena, Keenathan cheers in the upper stands on the left, though he is mostly obscured from vision. During an ending vignette, Keenathan performs at the inn in Repine, along with the other pirates.

Trivia

• Keenathan's octopus staff is referred to as "KeenathanSquid" and "Squid" in the picture files.
• The initial concept for Keenathan, a character who is inexplicably proud of their name despite their name sounding dumb, was created during a conversation between Thierry Boulanger and Eric W. Brown as they were playing Tetris 99.
