Throes of the Watchmaker,[1] also formatted as Throes of The Watchmaker,[2] is a free DLC expansion for Sea of Stars, which released on May 20, 2025. It is accessible after completing the game by rolling the credits at least once. New Game + files do not meet this criteria, so the game must be completed again if this mode happens to be activated.
"Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker" is a separate download from "Sea of Stars," so the DLC must be downloaded from its respective digital distribution platform, such as its entry on Steam,[3] the Nintendo eShop,[4] the PlayStation Store,[5] or the Xbox Games Store.[6]
Valere and Zale are playable, as well as the Artificer,[7] who was previously an NPC. Throes of the Watchmaker was announced as a stretch goal during the Sea of Stars Kickstarter and was referred to as a "clockwork conundrum."[2] In 2024, it was given the tagline "Malevolent spectacle awaits."[8]

Story[]

On the world map, a message in a bottle from Hortence manifests itself, bidding the party to board The Vespertine in order to help Keenathan with a problem. There, Keenathan mourns that his name is not truly Keenathan, as informed by the Sky Giants Council earlier in the adventure. Teaks advises that this can be altered with an enchanted pocket watch, engraved by the Watchmaker herself, an Ovate with the power to shape time and space.
The Artificer unveils a teleporter that allows travel between The Vespertine and the Watchmaker's workshop. At the workshop, the party and the pirates attempt to make conversation with the Watchmaker, who remains aloof and curt. However, she becomes interested when Teaks tells her that the party knows the Watchmaker is an Ovate. Teaks obtains a story from her via the Lore Grimoire, revealing the source of the Watchmaker's throes.
Some time ago, the Watchmaker and Aephorul formed a temporary alliance in order to build the Clockwork Castle, a structure with the power to control time itself. Unbeknownst to the Watchmaker, Aephorul secretly corrupted one of the cogs in the Watchmaker's stockpile, turning it into a Seed of Evil. Eventually after the completion of the castle, the Watchmaker created a miniature clockwork world called Horloge, unknowingly using the cursed cog during its creation. She was unable to troubleshoot an imperfection with the world, so she traveled into it with the Dialocus to find the source of the problem. However, this was what Aephorul desired, and the cog sapped at her essence, creating an evil twin of herself called The Puppeteer. The Watchmaker escaped back to her workshop and sadly sealed the clock, knowing that one day it would bring rise to the Dweller of Scourge.
The Watchmaker requests that the Solstice Warriors perform a cleansing on the clock in exchange for the enchanted pocket watch. She cautions that the number of people who should enter the world must be limited, as those with a strong enough aura will manifest an evil twin. Valere, Zale, the Artificer, and the pirates (sans Captain Klee'shaë) venture into Horloge, leaving behind the other party members.
At the Town of Horloge, the party is accosted by the henchmen of The Puppeteer, Pif & Pouf. The Solstice Warriors are not at full strength in the clockwork world, and are unable to defeat the two jesters. The jesters then summon Monsieur Tendu to sap away what remains of the Solstice Warriors' aura and powers, then order him to jail the party in the Oubliettes.
In the Oubliettes, the Artificer, along with the pirates, break out of their cells and make their way to Zale and Valere, who are trapped in a cell with a new ally, Fardush. Fardush helps Zale and Valere out by teaching them to play by Horloge's rules, with Zale having the agility for juggling, and Valere having the balance for acrobatics. With their newfound skills, they manage to escape and return to the Town of Horloge. Meanwhile, at the Big Top, The Puppeteer uses the Solstice Warriors' essence to create the Narcis King and the Feral Queen, evil twins of Zale and Valere respectively.
